Legislative Update
02.20.2026
The 2026 Legislative session is now in full swing, and the House is once again evenly divided. Just like last year, progress will require cooperation, honest conversations, and a willingness to work together despite our differences. While that can make the process more challenging, it also creates an opportunity to focus on practical solutions and move forward on issues that matter most to Minnesota families.
One of the most important topics we are addressing early this session is strengthening oversight and restoring accountability in state government, more simply stated, ending fraud! Minnesotans are rightfully asking for stronger safeguards to ensure taxpayer dollars are protected and programs serve the people they were intended to help. Every single wasted or fraudulent dollar means that vulnerable adults and children are not receiving the services and supports we all know they need.
Last session, Senate File 856 proposed creating an independent Office of the Inspector General designed to improve oversight, increase transparency, and provide real enforcement tools to prevent fraud. The bill received strong bipartisan support. It passed the Senate, had support from House Republicans, and was supported by the Governor. Unfortunately, the House DFL denied its passage.
This week, the issue returned for discussion in the State Government Committee. House Republicans again offered to move forward with the bill from last session. But once again, some of my DFL colleagues want to water down this important office by weakening the accountability provisions.
Here are some of the major differences:
In one of my committee’s this week, a Republican colleague brought up the fraud issues in childcare centers. He was interrupted by a DFL member who stated that the fraud was “alleged.” I mention this only to share that if legislators simply refuse to acknowledge that fraud is real, even with the convictions and guilty pleas, it’s no surprise that at least some members of the House DFL only want an Independent Office of Inspector General in name only.
Simply put, there is no good reason not to pass the Senate version of this bill. It has already earned bipartisan support, strikes a balanced approach to oversight and independence, and provides the tools needed to address fraud effectively. Minnesotans expect us to apologize and learn from past mistakes and then take meaningful action to protect taxpayer dollars.
Strengthening accountability should not be a partisan issue. I remain committed to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance real solutions that restore trust in government, protect public resources, and deliver results for the people we serve.
I will be sure to keep you informed as the situation develops.
Thank you for the opportunity to represent you.
Sincerely,
Rep. Danny Nadeau
